11 cops linked to Medicare24 contract suspended

JOHANNESBURG - Eleven of the senior police officers linked to the controversial Medicare24 have been suspended pending the finalisation of "disciplinary and related investigations".

The officers have been charged with failure to perform their duties.

The allegation is that the officers, who were part of the Bid Evaluation Committee (BEC), responsible for evaluating tenders and bids to ensure they comply with SAPS supply chain management regulations before being approved, did not verify information provided by alleged underworld figure Vusumuzi "Cat" Matlala for his tender bid.

The police have declined to comment, saying investigations were ongoing.

The officers are currently out on bail, where they are facing corruption and fraud charges. This is a criminal case in relation to the same matter. The case will return in the Pretoria Magistrate's Court on 26 June.

The National Prosecuting Authority's Investigating Directorate Against Corruption previously said there were several irregularities during the awarding of the tender and collusion by some members of the BEC and Matlala.
